    After the first foot it may get 'upset'. i'll assume you have a shovel to hand so just hit your ex-pet over the head.
    also, remember that storms may bring up the soil, so you need it to be a good couple of feet deep. otherwise the kids/neighbours/pet owner will get upset as well
